Commission of Inquiry

The Commission of Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse in Institutional Settings in Tasmania (the Commission of Inquiry) was formally established by an Order of the Governor of Tasmania on 15 March 2021. It inquired into how intuitions with a responsibility for children managed and responded to allegations and instances of child sexual abuse.

The Commission listened to survivors and victims of institutional child sexual abuse and their families and supporters. It found that there needs to be more done to prevent and protect children from sexual abuse in institutions in Tasmania, improve responses to child sexual abuse when it does occur, and support victim survivors.

The Report of the Commission of Inquiry into the Tasmanian Government’s Responses to Child Sexual Abuse in Institutional Settings was submitted to the Governor of Tasmania on 31 August 2023. The report was tabled in Parliament on Tuesday 26 September 2023.

The Report made 191 recommendations, all of which were accepted by the Tasmanian Government.

Other recommendations may be referred to the Monitor that relate to child safety and wellbeing in institutions operated by or on behalf of the state, as determined by both Houses of Parliament in accordance with section 13 of the Child Safety Reform Implementation Monitor Act 2024.
