Thank you to Wendy Moore and team at the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre for having us recently to Piyura Kitina / Risdon Cove to hear about the Nukara Strategy and Tirinna model, which underpins it.
Nukara is an Aboriginal Community-designed and led model of care and support for Aboriginal children, young people and families in Lutruwita/Tasmania.
It aims to safely connect Aboriginal children with their family, community and culture to help prevent them from going into the child protection and youth justice systems.
Nukara means 'to weave' in Palawa Kani, while Tirinna means 'to weave a basket', that can protect, support and hold children, young people and families together.
In a significant moment of collective leadership, the TAC and Department for Education, Children and Young People last month entered a funding agreement to support Nukara and recognise the importance of Aboriginal self-determination.
